The Dallas West End Historic District

The heartbeat of Downtown Dallas

The historic West End, a district rich with restored turn-of-the-century buildings, offers a unique blend of restaurants, retail and nightlife. The streets are lined with old-fashioned street cart vendors and sidewalk cafes, as well as a variety of restaurants. You can find plenty of live music and dancing at Dallas Alley, including Have A Nice Day Cafe and Tiki Bob’s. Learn more at http://www.dallaswestend.org/.

Deep Ellum

“[Deep Ellum] needs no daylight saving time because there is no bedtime”
– columnist Darwin Payne, 1937

Reemerging as a hotbed for jazz and blues thanks to DART Green Line, Deep Ellum has historically been the beating heart of an underground music scene. The district has been a part of Dallas’s cultural roots since the late 1800′s. The residents nicknamed the area “Deep Ellum” after its location, “deep” down on “Elm” Street. Today it remains a popular location for restaurants and nightlife, including such spots such as All Good Cafe, Tucker’s Blues, La Grange, Trees Dallas, and the Black Swan Saloon. The community also has a strong commitment for neighborhood safety.

Sundance Square, Ft. Worth

Named for the Sundance Kid, but without as many bank robberies.

Sundance Square consists of 20 blocks of restored and replicated turn-of-the-century buildings in downtown Fort Worth where people work, live, shop and dine. Sundance Square is home to the Bass Performance Hall and the Casa Manana theater, as well the Four Day Weekend improv club and City Streets, voted best dance club by the AOL City Guide. Fort Worth Stockyards

The version of Texas everyone expects it to be.

The stockyards are a former actual livestock market turned modern day revival of the way things used to be. The official historical district now celebrates Fort Worth’s long tradition as a part of the cattle industry. Many bars and nightclubs (including the world famous Billy Bob’s Texas) are located in the vicinity, and the area has a Western motif. There is also an opry and a rodeo. The Fort Worth Stockyards are the last standing stockyards in the United States. Some Fort Worth volunteers still run the cattle drives today, so that visitors may glimpse at life in the 1800s.

Denton, TX

The Metroplex’s Younger College Aged Brother

Denton is a city North of Dallas/Fort Worth and is home to two distinguished colleges – the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University. But that doesn’t mean it’s all studying at night. There are many popular night attractions around town, including Andy’s Bar and Grill, a multi-level bar with live music from all genres. Those who enjoy live theatrical performances should stop by the Campus Theatre. But for jazz lovers, don’t miss Denton’s annual Jazz Festival, featuring more than 1,300 performers on 6 stages, fine arts, food and games, held right in the heart of the city at the Civic Center Park. Learn more at the Denton Jazz Fest website.

Great Food

Even the sushi is good. Seriously.

According to online guide Urbanspoon, the Metroplex is home to over 12,000 different restaurants, and only 1,000 of them are Fast Food. Everything is on the menu, and everything is good. From traditional steakhouses and the expected barbecue or Tex-Mex fare, to the delicacies of Ethiopia, fantastic Sushi bars, incredible Creole cuisine, Mediterranean cafeterias, authentic German, and so much more. You could eat at a different spot in the Metroplex every day for over 30 years and still not sample everything that there is to offer. Whatever your flavor, you are guaranteed to find a favorite restaurant in the DFW.
