Despite Texas’ warm climate, hockey has been a tradition in Dallas since 1941, when the Texans joined the American Hockey Association. The Minnesota North Stars moved to Dallas in 1993 and became the Dallas Stars. Since arriving, the Stars have won their division six times and won the Stanley Cup in 1999. The Dallas Mavericks began as an expansion team in 1980. They had a slow start, but eventually became one of the top teams in the NBA. With the help of Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Finley, and under the ownership of Mark Cuban, the Mavericks have finished each of the last four years with 50+ wins. In the 2010-2011 season, their hard work and dedication paid off, culminating in a championship victory against LeBron James and the Miami Heat, their first NBA championship in franchise history. The Texas Rangers actually began in the 1960′s as the Washington Senators, with President John F. Kennedy throwing the first pitch of the expansion team’s history. The team moved to Texas in 1972, and has been home to such Major League Baseball legends as Nolan Ryan and Ivan (Pudge) Rodriguez.
